Can it be cured in Ayurveda

A male aged 23 years developed enlarged breast from the age of 13 years. He feel very shy to have it, which is even hard for touch, like small
stones.  He thought of surgery after lots of treatments. May be the surgery is last resort. The question here is “ Can it be cured in Ayurveda”

The condition is - Gynecomastia or Gynaecomastiaplay /ˌɡnɨkɵˈmæstiə/, is the abnormal development of largemammary glands in males resulting in breast enlargement. The term comes from the Greekγυνή gyné (stem gynaik-) meaning “woman” and μαστός mastós meaning “breast.” The condition can occur physiologically in neonates (due to female hormones from the mother), inadolescence, and in the elderly (Both in adolescence and elderly it is an abnormal condition associated with disease or metabolic disorders). In adolescent boys the condition is often a source of distress, but for the large majority of boys whose pubescent gynecomastia is not due to obesity, the breast development shrinks or disappears within a couple of years.

What to do?

AGE:  29 years (unmarried),

GENDER: Female,

WEIGHT: 44 kg

HEIGHT: 5.3”
HISTORY OF MY PROBLEM WITH THE TREATMENTS DONE:-  I have a very lengthy history which began with a minor problem of fissure and now has reached a stage where no one is able to figure out the exact post-surgical problem. Instead the complications have been kept on adding.

a)      I was on a tour for a month’s time. On reaching back my place, I noticed very little bleeding in stools but no pain. I was advised a local application (allopathy), Cremaffin syrup (3 spoons at bedtime) and sitz bath. Within 2 days, the bleeding stopped and never reappeared. There were loose stools and I was asked to reduce the dose of the syrup to 1 spoon, but loose stools kept appearing on and off. I then discontinued the syrup. However I was advised to continue sitz bath and the local application for few days, which I did for 5-6 days but could not continue, due to some personal reasons. I never had constipation. However there was slight burning sensation in the anal region and followed by continuous loose stools, which again increased the burning. These loose stools did not look like normal loose stools to me. Although I told about this to the doctor, there were no satisfactory results. I was also feeling very weak. I was told that I had developed a fissure and even before the loose stools were properly controlled, medicines for controlling loose stools were given and lateral sphincterotomy was performed on me in October 2009.

b)      On the successive day, I could move the muscle properly and I was not able to sit properly. Stools did not pass. So I was given a suppository and stools passed. I was asked to continue the Cremaffin syrup, tablets Ciplox Tz and Rabicam and sitz bath. About 2-3 days later, the loose stools reappeared, the burning had not reduced and there was pain in the abdomen. I was not able to sit properly for sitz bath. Situation had worsened. So I had to go in for colonoscopy. The histopathology report said that there was chronic non-specific inflammation and diarrhoea under investigation.  The ultrasound report of USG and X-ray of stomach both showed a normal report. But my major problem was not just loose stools but the anal and interrelated muscular movement, which was not at all proper and I was not able to either sit or sleep properly in any posture and if I tried to sit there was an upward rebound in the oesophagus. There was backward muscular twisting of the legs right from the hips to the knee. So I had to sit or walk very uncomfortably and in pain.

c)      I consulted an ayurvedic physician at this stage. After listening to the problem, he said that I should not have gone through the surgery and it had created more problems, instead it could have been solved easily with medicines. But as I had already gone through the surgery, I had to look forward not backward. He gave me Amplapitta Mishran, Abhraloha, Stomatab, Sootashekhar rasa and Jatyadi Tel for local application. The burning reduced slightly, loose stools continued and the interrelated muscular movement problem remained the same. The doctor said that the bowels were slightly irritable and that even before the surgery the bowels might have been slightly irritable. I was given Rasa Parpati and it did not work, I was administered Ksheerabasti (first for 7days and after a gap of 10 days for another week.). This completely reduced the burning, stool consistency became normal and abdomen pain also reduced. I was asked to take Abhraloha, Stomatab tablets and Bilvaavaleha.

d)       However after the entire basti, the urge to pass stools had very much reduced and the region had become constricted-like. So without knowing what to do, I began to force the stools by exerting pressure on my chest. The stool consistency was normal, but spasms developed because of the force and the spasms ran upto the oesophagus. My periods were also getting postponed; and breast pain was also being developed. However the bleeding pattern was normal. This continued for 4 months.

e)       The chest was continuously becoming heavy. Chest X-ray, endoscopy, blood test routine, stool culture test, liver function test, thyroid test were all checked every report was normal. I was then given Carmiliv and Nervono tablets(for nerves) and Saraswatarishta syrup. This did not help in any way. However this forcing of stools(consistency was normal), worked to my advantage without my knowledge. The spasms had become so severe that gases could not pass either through the anus or through the oesophagus as the spasms that ran upto the oesopahgus made the oesophagus constricted like and prevented the gases from being passed out. It was as good as there was no outlet. Also the spacing between the legs had very much narrowed.

f)       After 4 months, I was given Bruhat vata Chintaman rasa tablets  and asked to drink warm jeera and ajwain water. Slowly gases began passing out through anus and 8 days later, the muscle and the related muscles worked in such a way that it released the spasms and the constriction-like( like an extremely compressed balloon was released in proper proportion). For the first time after the surgery, the region had become very much relieved. I could sit and sleep easily in any posture, the spacing between the legs became proper and I could move them very freely as I wanted. Also there was no backward twisting of legs. For the next 3days, stools passed very normally and easily. I could sit, walk and sleep very peacefully.

g)      Now it had become so normal like before that I felt my main problem was solved. This clearly showed that there was a relation between the leg movement, being able to sit and sleep properly in different postures and the normal sphincter and interrelated muscular movements. All the 3 seemed to be alright now.

h)      But due to the forcing on chest which had led to the anal spasm formation which had run up to the esophagus, the esophagus that had become constricted-like and belching was being suppressed. So I asked the doctor if medicines could be given to release this esophageal constriction-like so that chest would become relaxed and belching could occur, through vaman or any other method. However that was rejected.

i)        Instead I was asked to take up a course of Ghrita basti for a week in the evening (with and without evening snacks on alternate days). The anal region had become slightly dry because of forcing. On the first day, the ghee was administered and the doctor said that the ghee would pass out within no time. As the ghee was being administered the region became constricted- like and I had to take pain in evacuating it. The successive day, I was again administered the same (on empty stomach), the region had become further constricted and there was itching in the region. That day the stools did not pass. The basti was discontinued. Again sitting and sleeping in any posture became a difficulty and stools did not pass. This made the doctor think that there might be a stricture so got a P/R done from another gastro-entero surgeon, who said that there was no stricture at all.

j)        I was given a mild laxative Gandharva Haritaki initially on alternate days and then once in 4days. I was asked to dilate with my fingers, using Jatyadi tel, whenever stools did not pass. This continued for two months.  I was again given Bruhat vata Chintaman rasa tablets. This time, it did not help. The belching tried to occur and whenever it occurred with a greater force, the anal muscle would become very compressed. This continued for a month and slowly the oesophagus was relieved of the constriction-like.

k)      Then I was given Shatavari Kalp powder to be taken at bed time. A week later, an allopathic tablet was given to relax the anal muscle. The next day, during micturition, I got the urge to pass stools and the anal muscle slightly relaxed and stools passed. However the anal region was still like a narrow slide now there was no pain anywhere else. Still the sitting and sleeping was not proper because of the muscle. This continued for 5 months.

l)        I was then suggested to go through Virechan. The plan was take the ghee for 4 days and the purgative on the fifth day. I was given Shatavari Ghritam and Sukumara Ghritam. For the first 3 days, stools passed normally between the narrowed muscles. On the 4th day, I perhaps put slightly more pressure and spasm occurred. The next day I got my periods, so I took the purgative (Gandharvahastaadi tel+milk), after 5days. Due to the spasm, I did not have the urge to pass stools and I had to literally force out the virechan.

m)    Two days later, the gases started passing out, the urge to pass stools improved but the spasm was there. So few days later Laxomed tablets (3tablets/day after food) were given to release the spasm. On the first day I took the tablets and whatever I had eaten began to pass out. So I was told to cut the dosage to 2tabs/day. The next day, I had taken the first dose of tablet and had to take up a 3.5-hour journey. After 2hours of journey, I had to urgently pass stools, but had to control it.

n)      Then on reaching the destination fully watery stools passed with great force. While passing, on the left side spasm was disproportionately released with the interrelated and the leg becoming kind of backward twisted, there was a backward pull, stretch and bulging of muscle upto a point which is almost 2-3inches above the tail bone, causing pain all along the back and the backbone. On the right side it was partially released. The legs became kind of backward twisted again, differently on the left and right sides. After this episode, all the time, there is pain on both the sides of the hips, differently on both the sides. After this I had fever and stomach pain which reduced in 10days time.

  • o)      Then lumbar X-ray was taken, the report was normal. To reduce pain along that point kati basti was given but as that was not normal kind of pain, it did not reduce and I could not lie down properly either. Even the orthopedician who is also a general surgeon, who took the X-ray said that it was not the normal lumbar pain problem but appeared to be related to the surgical region and the panchakarmas that were administered. Mahayogaraj Guggulu, Stretchcap, Navashvagandhasva, Vishamusti Vati were given but did not help. Manoll, Ksheerbala drops and Saraswatarishta syrup were given but did not help.

p)      Then I was administered matrabasti with Ksheerabala tel(60ml) for 6 days, but no change. Was tried for Sarvabhyanga with Ksheerabala tel, but as I could not lie properly, it became difficult to take up the massage. A month later matrabasti with Sukumara ghrita-7days, body massage with Balaashwandhi taila-4days did not work. Body massage with Mahamasha taila and Kheerabhaspasweda for 7days and matrabasti with ghee did not work either. After this 4 different matrabastis were given with different ghees and oils at different intervals.

q)      Then I was given Dhanwantaram Gulika and Gandharvahastadi kashaya tablets. I kept on taking but no use. After 2months Dashamoolarishta syrup, dhanwataram taila tablets were given and anuvasan basti with oil and kashaya(for muscle relaxation) on alternate days was given for a week. Whenever the muscle was relaxed, all the contents passed out in loose form, but my actual problem remained totally unaltered. No change at all. As per my experience, matrabastis have not at all helped me. Also at this stage, mere relaxation of anal muscle has not been of any use for my kind of problem.

r)        I have not mentioned the names of few medicines, which I do not know.

SYMPTOMS OF PRESENT PROBLEEM WITH ITS DURATION:- I cannot move my anal interrelated muscles i.e., the surrounding muscles properly right from after the surgery, either while sitting, standing or sleeping. However, the problem pattern and the manner in which the movement occurs has kept on changing after different panchakarmas.  After the virechan and the incident mentioned in point(m) and (n) above, the nature and pattern of pain has remained the same since then. I cannot sit or sleep in any proper posture and cannot move the anal interrelated muscles properly, either while standing sitting or sleeping. Also there is continuous leg twisting.

Rationalists warn people against AYUSH system

[source]

The Federation of Rationalist Associations of India raised questions about what people generally accepted as a system of scientific knowledge during a workshop on development of scientific temper here on Sunday.

A number of “healing methods” which were being passed off as “medical systems” were not really systems of medicine at all, said Srinivas Kakkilaya.

Dr. Kakkilaya explained the difference between traditional quacks who peddled medicines in small bottles at public places and fraudulent activities such as knowingly misleading a person, about the extent of his medical knowledge.

He spoke about systems of “healing” which, he said, many doctors opposed as they did not consider them as legitimate medical systems. Some doctors preferred to use the term “evidence-Based medicine” rather than the word allopathy, because the word was coined as an opposite to the word “homeopathy” by Samuel Hahnemann, German founder of the system. Dr. Kakkilaya said that systems such as AYUSH (Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) were unsubstantiated systems. Giving an example, he said 3,000 years ago, Ayurveda was probably the most advanced medical system because of its understanding of the human anatomy. Even today, a large part of what was taught to students was the same as it was in the original Ayurveda texts. He said that even though Ayurveda had no concept of the heart as an organ that pumped blood to the whole body, students were taught how to cure heart disease.

The logic of homeopathy wasunacceptable as the principles of the system as developed by Hahnemann had not been tested.

There was no research to prove either the AYUSH system’s effects or non-effects whereas for evidence-based medicine, all drugs were subjected to extensive peer-review research . For medicines prescribed under AYUSH, there was no such research to show the effects of the medicine on the body.

Federation president Narendra Nayak said that a Supreme Court verdict had said in 2005 that 14 systems of healing were not “recognised” systems of medicine and that their funding and practice should be stopped.

//technoayurveda comment//

Healing is treatment, the health systems may adopt few available rational healing methods as treatments. The Evidence based systems are resulting in to massive reactions because of trial and error methods. Mere statistics is not every thing. Still the AYUSH systems follow the true scientific methods along with present day satisfying “Evidence Based Medical” methods. Many researches done in AYUSH are in the cupboards or in dark rooms. No Researcher of the day are provided with any past researches by any university or AYUSH it self. A step towards stop Quackery is necessary in any system. Many protesters of these Traditional sciences – may tell reasoning as the cause, may be not aware the entire Indian sciences are based on reasoning. As par the recognition of any system is with respect to acceptance in public. One point I admit is – The AYUSH doctors should reach the common man with trusted healing methods with a methodical research approaches. Instead of cursing the tradition, as an Indian developing a vision and understanding about Indian Sciences is necessary at this juncture  - technoayurveda – http://www.technoayurveda.com

World’s first sex school opens in Austria

Even though India taught – Vajikarana and Kamasutra, first to the mankind – now Austria took the privilege of opening an exclusive school for Loving. The full text is as follows – [source]

London, Dec 1 (IANS) While many people may think it’s an activity which should be best learned behind closed doors, an enterprising Swedish schoolmistress thinks otherwise.

Ylva-Maria Thompson has opened the world’s first international sex school for teaching the art of being better lovers, the Daily Mail reported.

The Austrian International Sex School in Vienna offers ‘hands on’ lessons in seduction for 1,400 pounds a term. The ‘headmistress’ says anyone over the age of 16 can enrol at ‘the world’s first college of applied sexuality’.

Students of the course are expected to stay in a co-ed dormitory block where they’re expected to practice their ‘homework’. By the end of their course, they are awarded a qualification.

The school head said: ‘Our core education is not theoretical, but very practical. The emphasis is on how to be a better lover.

‘Sexual positions, caressing techniques, anatomical features. And we teach people hands on.’

School’s spokesperson Melodi Kirsch exuded confidence that the school would be a great success.

The school, however, has already turned controversial in Austria with it raunchy advertisments showing a couple making love having already invited ban by Austrian TV.
